G36/G58 Dual ADAHRS
« on: May 04, 2010, 06:36:29 AM »
To all G36/G58 owners (there are about 400 of us):

The one shortcoming of our great airplanes is the lack of a second Air Data and Attitude Heading Reference System computer. If you have ever had a failure (I have) you'll wish you had a backup. I was told by the factory that it is not an option becuase it could cost up to $1 million to certify a backup ADAHRS for the G1000 in our aircraft. I just read that Piper is offering a dual ADAHRS in the Malibu Matrix and Mirage now, so the competiton is leading the way. My thought is that if enough G36/G58 owners would agree to purchase a backup ADAHRS kit, it may be worth the factory's efforts to certify a daul ADAHRS option for retrofit and for installation in new aircraft. I would be willing to pursue this with the factory if there is enough interest from other owners.

I think if you compare the spec's between Beech and Piper, you'll see that Piper's Garmin offering is 2 x 10" PFD and 1 x 15" MFD. Hence, the dual ADAHRS. Beech only offers the 2 x 10" PFD/MFD, so only a single ADAHRS.

To add the second ADAHRS to the single PFD would require a lot of work on their part. I'm not saying that they shouldn't offer it as I think a lot of people would order it. I think it's more the faulty Beech mentality that if you want all weather, full redundant capabilities, go to the King Air. They have the idea that everyone should be able to pull that kind of money out at anytime.

Thanks for the response Tracy. Cirrus also offers a dual ADAHRS option with only one PFD and one MFD. In the G1000 system the ADAHRS is not integral to the display as it is in the Avidyne systems. Therefore adding another ADAHRS does not require another PFD.

I would totally invest in a second AHRS in my G58 Baron!  Put me on the list!
